Borough Market Recipe - Italian Pasta with Chanterelles in Cream Sauce

After buying fresh handmade Italian pasta with a spinachricotta filling, chanterelles and some chicken from Borough market, I decided to make the ingredients with a cream sauce, a very calorific but also very tasty German style recipe.

Ingredients
Chanterelle mushrooms (ca. 100g)
Closed cup mushrooms (ca. 100g)
Italian ravioli w/ spinach ricotta filling (200g)
Garlic (1 – 2 cloves)
Double Cream
Salt
Pepper                                                                     胡椒
Chicken stock
White Whine

1. Chop up the garlic and onionsinto little pieces, the mushrooms and the chicken into thin strips.
2. Put some pepper on the chicken.
3. Heat some oil in a pan, add the onions and garlic. After 2 minutes fry the mushrooms.
4. Take them out when done and fry the chicken.
5. After it has turned white, add the mushrooms as well.
6. For the sauce: add the double cream to the pan (I try to use as little as possible, since it is really fat), stir in some milk to make it less thick, add some Italian Parmesan cheese and chicken stock. Put it on a low temperature to simmer and carefully stir in a dash or two of white wine.
7. For the pasta: heat up some waterand add salt, add the pasta when the water is boiling and cook for about 3minutes. Drain and arrange on a plate.
8. Add the sauce.
9. Tuck in!

I hope everyone enjoyed our little trip to Borough Market and if you can get your hands on these ingredients, which I realise can be tricky if you are in China, definitely try it out for yourself and let me know what you think!

Wreck - It Ralph: Destroying the Competition

When I saw the trailer for Wreck-It Ralph, my first thought was „Awesome, a movie about arcade games! I am going to love this!” And I did. Even more than I thought I would.

What looked to me like a fun movie, with many famous characters from the games we played when we were young including Sonic, Street Fighters and Pacman, actually turned out to be so much more than that. Wreck-It Ralph is a story about being forced into certain boxes in life and trying to escape. Even more so it questions what and who is good and bad in this world of gaming, giving the two-dimensional characters of the past a new-found depth.

Walt Disney Pictures
Without a doubt, Wreck-It Ralph is another one of those modern animation movies leading their field by proving that animation is not just for little children anymore. Quite the opposite, Ralph joins the ranks of the new generationof tangled princesses and red-headed Scottish royals who question thetraditional Disney story and storm too success spewing sarcasm along the way.
Another surprising turn of events was how touched I actually was by the movie. When Ralph finally accepts that he is bad, and that is goodthereby becoming good (you will understand it, when you get there), I actually teared up. After almost 25 years of watching movies, that is not something I do lightly. Strangely enough, this is not the first animated movie that has struck a chord with me recently. This might just be personal preference, but you can really feel the hard work and love hat goes into animated movies.

Walt Disney Pictures
The movie was perfect down to the last detail, with characters moving the way they would have in the games and the design of the different gaming worlds was just pure eye candy, especially in Sugar Rush, where everything was quite literally candy.
Funny, touching and nostalgic of the good old arcade days, Wreck-It Ralph has so far been my favourite animated movie since Tangled wrapped itself around our hearts three years ago. The Disney reign continues…

Cloud Atlas - Yes, Please

The Cloud Atlas trailer seemed very promising, but has the film adaptation of the novel by David Mitchell been able to deliver?

When watching this movie, there are a number of precautions you should take. 1. Turn off your phone. 2. Get rid of any possible distraction, including but not limited to the following: tasty food, friend or partner, land line, if you are one of the few who still have one, door bell. 3. Concentrate. 4. Concentrate more.

With six different story lines unraveling simultaneously in front of your eyes, you are already hard-pressed to follow the goings-on. Since this story however looks at six different people's souls throughout time this means additional confusion to cloud your mind. For one, every famous actor plays multiple roles throughout the movie and you spend half your time trying to recognize whether it is Hugh Grant, Tom Hanks, Matrix' Agent Smith aka Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess pretending to be Asian or Xun Zhou pretending to be European.

Cloud Atlas Movie Poster - Warner Bros. Pictures
If you think this sounds confusing, just wait until you try to find all the connections that further exists between the 6 different story lines, since each story includes allusions to the one that went before it chronologically (while still running simultaneously). It is all connected of course by the Cloud Atlas, that certain piece of music that you are trying to find throughout the chaos of characters and chronicles. Yes, I did feel the need for an atlas to uncloud my mind.

If you are able to watch this film in full concentration mode, it is a trek through time (not stars) providing you with amazing imagery spanning from the 1800s to the vision of a distant, post-apocalyptic future very similar the "Time Machine"  setting and storyline. My personal highlights were probably Hugh Grant as a scary tribe member/monster and Jim Broadbent reenacting his version of Prison Break. If you can manage to stay away from your phone for long enough, this movie is definitely worth 172 (!) minutes of your time.

Sen Nin Teppanyaki Restaurant in Camden Town

Stepping into Sen Nin, the Japanese Teppanayaki Grill on a Saturday at six, the last thing I expected was to be the only guest in the entire restaurant (especially since the online system had told me any other time slot was booked out - they should call those tech guys). Ah, well it made us feel like VIPs in a very large private room.

The decoration was typically Japanese, simple elegance in tones of black and red. I instantly felt comfortable in this lovely surrounding. Aesthetics generally seems to be a point Sen Nin are eager to make, as a meticulously symmetrical arrangement of a starter sample was placed in front of us only minutes after we had ordered it.

We went for one of the Teppanyaki meals including a deliciously savoury miso soup and a mix of starters, i.e. sushi, gyeoza chicken dumplings, spring roll and salad. The main course of our choice were soba noodles fried with veg, steak and tiger prawns and the dessert a very generous piece of cheese cake.

While initially slightly sceptical at the grill, seemingly slightly tattered and unkempt, our very own personal chef made sure to clean it before use and after, putting suspicious culinary minds to rest. He then went on to gives us his own little show including juggling knives and a hard boiled egg which landed in his hat (the egg, not the knives). On to the main course. Noodles, meat and seafood were drenched in garlic butter, which to me means heaven on earth, the British meat grilled to soft perfection.

Admittedly, the prices at £48 per menu are steep and probably the cause for a lack of guests throughout our two hour stay in their Camden location (one of three in London). However, there seem to be various 2 for 1 and half price offers going on to make it a lot more affordable. Especially for London standards.

TGI Live Red & White Christmas Party @ 55 Club London

Taiwanese Bubble Tea And Street Food - BoboQ @ Charing Cross Street

The Real Deal Taiwanese Bubble Tea

With Bubble Tea Shops sprouting like mushrooms all over Europe, it is often difficult to know which one to pick. Let me give you a hint: If it’s genuine you are looking for, BoboQ’s London branch is a good place to start. The real deal Bubble Tea shop in China Town is run by a mix of Taiwanese staff, from the place that brought the bubbly brew into our lives, and helpful locals that can guide you through the art of ordering bubble tea.

Spoilt For Choice – BoboQ Drinks Menu

The first reaction when you walk up to the counter is a wave of astonishment at the sheer range of choices. Originally made with black milk tea and tapioca pearls, bubble tea has long since evolved into something much more complex.  BoboQ offer black teas, green teas or even yoghurts with extra flavouring such as mango, strawberry and passion fruit to choose from. For those amongst us, who prefer it less sweet there half sugar or no sugar options are also available! And then you still have to add the topping! Tapioca Pearls have been joined by new additions such as Aloe Vera Jelly or Popping Bobas. What now?

Let’s back up a little…Popping Bobas, what the heck is that? The little pearls of fruit juice are produced using principles of molecular gastronomy: through a chemical reaction a thin skin forms around the drops of juice making them POP and explode in your mouth in all their fruity glory.

The choice of 20 different toppings at BoboQ is one of the largest on offer with tastes from lychee to yoghurt. Apparently, especially newcomers to the BT scene enjoy the extensive range and create their own crazy tea and bubble mixes.

Of course the question is, has BoboQ chosen quantity over quality? I can assure you, it hasn’t. Its original Pearl Milk tea is sweet, but not too sweet. It tastes of tea, but not too strong. The pearls are chewy, but not hard. Simply tealicious.

Taiwanese Snacks and Cakes at BoboQ

Since the culinary trip would not be complete without a taste of Taiwan, BoboQ offers a range of Taiwanese snacks, which will be even further extended in 2013. So far you can get Taiwanese street food such as my absolute fav, the classic Taiwanese salty crispy chicken (aka salt and pepper chicken), an amazingly fragrant and tasty vermicelli noodle dish with Chinese mushrooms and tender pork or Guandong Zhu, a mix of stewed fishball, sausage and vegetable skewers cooked in broth (non- spicy or steam-out-of-your-ears-spicy, i.e. the best!) amongst other signatory dishes.

If you have more of a sweet tooth you are sure to find something at the cake counter, any child’s dream come true. In cooperation with Old Tree, BoboQ is offering an extensive range of aesthetically decorated, yummy cakes ranging from classics such as cheese cake to more daring flavours for Western mouths such as green tea cakes and biscuits – definitely worth a try, if you are interested in tasting new things.

BubbleTail Revolution?

And as if this were not enough, BoboQ has even become an innovator in the world of Bubble by creating the first Bubble Cocktail (or BubbleTail as I think it should be called!). BoboQ’s very own bartender has infused a milky smooth Grasshopper cocktail with tapioca pearls. And here I was thinking Bubble Tea could not get any better!

More than just Tea To Go – Bubble Tea Café and Party Floor

So, now you will be wondering why BoboQ has its very own barman. Well, that is because BoboQ is not just another small Bubble Tea shop with a counter and two tables to stand at. It is actually the largest BT shop in London with a very generous seating area, comfy sofas and even an upstairs party floor including bar.

Ivy, one of BoboQs friendly staff tells us that making people feel welcome to stay and chill out for a while is the whole point of the shop. Not just another rush-in-rush-out To Go tea shop but more of a café where people can stay and work or just relax after a long day.

And this is exactly what the café’s design reflects. Stylishly decorated in warm orange and white tones (apparently within only the space of one week!), spacious and with cosy seating, the shop has such a calming, relaxed feel, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of busy London. Absolute highlight are the coat hangers shaped as dog butts – I am in love!

In such a central location, it just lends itself for an after-work chat. You are more of an after-work party person? No problem! BoboQ has a licence and the second floor has space for parties of around 40 people – private or company – with a bar and even karaoke! You can enjoy your BubbleTail and party it up with your friends. They are even having a party for New Years.

To sum it up, the friendly staff, the lovely atmosphere and the good food and drink make BoboQ a wonderful place to hang out, let the soul dangle and try something new! Their different offers such as 2 for 1 per Facebook like or a cake and a drink for £5 make it even more tempting.

***Sadly it seems that this place has been closed down****

TGI Live Red & White Christmas Party @ 55 Club London

Christmas is coming so what better way than to celebrate than with a party? The TGI LiveChristmas Red & White Party at 55 Club last week was definitely a massive mood-lifter during depressing December.

DJ Jakstarr, imported from Taiwan, was responsible for the groove that made us move – and move we did. The music mix was just right to keep us going through the night and let us get a taste of Taiwan partying, something that is definitely on my to-do list after TGI and DJ Jakstarr’s cooperation.

The Red & White dress code was not only responsible for the Christmassy feel of the party, it also made for a lot of fun to see different guests going all out – ladies in hot red dresses or even sexy Santa costumes and lads with crazy bow ties, guests got really creative with the colour theme.

What I really enjoyed apart from the colour theme was the location. 55 Club has a great design, with Victorian style black and blue motive in the numerous private booths. The colour theme gave the club a very stylish feel, while the big number of booths gave it a really comfortable, relaxed feel.

As to be expected, the alcohol was flowing and the exclusive group of party-goers was dancing wildly. Instead of candy canes, the guests got a lot of eye-candy when the ladies found the small podium in front of the DJ’s turntables and showed off their dancing skills.

All in all, the Red & White party was a great way to celebrate and let loose amidst the stress of Christmas shopping. The only question is whether Santa will still be bringing gifts to all of the guests, since some of them might not have been very good girls or boys this year ;)
